Beta-glucan is a family of substances that serve as structural elements in the cell walls of plants, yeasts, and mushrooms.
LifeLink’s beta-glucan comes from baker’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Beta-glucan has been the subject of extensive scientific research since the 1960s because of its ability to stimulate immune
function, to improve cholesterol profiles, and to inhibit (or even reverse) the growth and spread of cancerous tissue.
Among the many medical conditions for which beta-glucan appears to be applicable are:
cancer
cardiovascular conditions, high cholesterol, hypertension
allergies
wounds
diabetes, over-eating, obesity
gene damage due to radiation
infections by bacteria, viruses, and parasites
Beta-glucan acts in very complex ways upon the immune system.
It stimulates the production of various signaling molecules
which, in turn, activate the specialized cells of the immune
system. In this way, beta-glucan protects the body against infections
by viral, bacterial, fungal and protozoal pathogens, and even
defends it against cancer.
The potency of beta-glucan can be substantially increased if it is taken with vitamin C.

Beta-glucan is a natural complex carbohydrate derived from the cell
walls of plants, yeast, and mushrooms. It has been the subject of
extensive scientific research since the 1960s because of its ability to
stimulate immune function and to inhibit (and even reverse) cancer
progression and metastasis.
Beta-glucan’s anti-cancer abilities are
thought to result from its immune effects. And its immune effects
derive from its activation of macrophage cells. Macrophages are immune
cells that trap and engulf foreign cells and particles, scavenge
cellular debris, and destroy infectious agents such as viruses,
parasites, bacteria, and fungi. Since beta-1,3-glucan produces its
broad-scale immune effects by being a nonspecific immune stimulator, it
can be directed at many health problems.
Studies in cell-culture, animals and in
humans have shown that the anti-tumor activity initiated by beta-glucan
can be long-lived and can occur even when beta-glucan is given orally
one month prior to the presence of a tumor. Some of the cancer types
that have been shown to be sensitive to beta-glucan supplementation
include: breast cancer, lymphoma, colon cancer, sarcoma, liver cancer,
and lung cancer. Other cancer types are under investigation.
Beta-glucan is also reported to have cholesterol-lowering properties. (But other supplements, such as policosanol, would be
much less expensive for this purpose.)
In clinical studies, effective doses fell into the following ranges:
Immune enhancement: 2 mg/kg/day (46 mg for each 50 lbs of bodyweight);
Anti-cancer: 2 to 60 mg/kg/day (46 to 1364 mg for each 50 lbs bodyweight);
Lowering cholesterol: 46 mg/kg/day (1045 mg for each 50 lb bodyweight).
The potency of beta-glucan can be substantially increased if it is taken with vitamin C.
LifeLink’s Beta-Glucan is derived entirely from yeast.
